Since 1996, PHRU has conducted community-partnered, innovative, ethical and multi-disciplinary research.
PHRU was instrumental in bringing PMTCT to South Africa and conducted groundbreaking research that rewrote international PMTCT guidelines. We enrolled the first South African HIV vaccine study participant and we were one of the first research units to move to—and advocate for—rapid, on-site testing for HIV.
Today, PHRU researchers investigate adult, adolescent and paediatric HIV treatments; co-infections such as tuberculosis (TB); novel HIV prevention methods; and innovative behavioural and social science research.
A world-class research facility, PHRU remains grounded in its initial purpose—to reduce the impact of the HIV epidemic on South Africans, in collaboration with the community.
