HIV vaccine research

The HIV/AIDS Vaccine Division (HAVD) was established in 2001 with funding from the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative (SAAVI) and later with funding provided by the US National Institutes for Health HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN).

Its primary aims were to:
  • Conduct multiple, parallel phase I/II trials according to Good Clinical Practice guidelines in order to identify appropriate preventative and therapeutic phase III trial candidates
  • Develop phase III capability both in rural and urban centres in South Africa
  • Enable a multi-centred, African collaborations to conduct HIV Vaccine research in Africa, especially large phase III efficacy trials
The HAVD has formed a community advisory board and developed a recruitment strategy to encourage participation in these studies. These studies have been well received by the community.
