What is the aim of an internship at the PHRU?
The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa, gives interns and volunteers the chance to:participate in the PHRU's work or start independent programmes that will enhance the unit's research; and learn about the PHRU's goals, policies, ctivities and community.
What should my background be?
You should be studying towards a formal, approved post-graduate qualification or should have a background or interest in public health or medical research. You should be fluent in English and have some computer skills, such as the ability to use MS Word and Excel. Will I get paid as an intern?
No - you must cover all your travel, local transport, accommodation, visa and living costs. What about visas?
It is easy to get a three-month tourist visa, but those for longer periods must be processed by the South African consulate in your country. Unfortunately, the PHRU is unable to help. Read more about visas in our visitors' section. How long is an internship?
Generally an internship lasts six weeks and up to a maximum of 12 months. The internship programme is variable and will be tailored to your needs. The department that hosts the intern is responsible, with the intern, for developing a relevant programme. What are typical intern assignments?
Interns can expect to work on health and HIV/AIDS education, as well as on grant development and co-ordination. They also help with the monitoring and administration of projects. Interns are expected to devote themselves full-time to the work assigned to them. There are many research projects under way at the unit. What work is involved?
Interns may have to produce reports for the department to which they have been assigned. And they must submit an evaluation of their experiences to human resources at the end of their internship.Who do I contact about internships?
